Olan


Olan is a very simple recipe, not masked with any spices and forms part of the onam sadya . This recipe was given to me by Anita who is a fantastic cook.
Ingredients:
Red cowpeas/ Chowri-1 cup
Pumpkin- 2 cup, chopped
Green Chillis-3
Curry leaves-few
Coconut milk-1 cup
Salt
Coconut oil-1 tsp (optional)
Method:
1. Pressure cook the cowpeas and pumpkin with green chillies, curry leaves , salt and water.
2. When it is cooked, add 1 cup of coconut milk and let it just heat through. Take it off stove add the coconut oil and serve as a side with rice and sambaar .

  2. I think different regions prepare it differently, my mom inlaw makes it without coconut milk. Shall try with ash gourd , if I can find onE in UK
